stay, don't stand around

So, I got a job. I didn't blog about it, but that wasn't because I wasn't excited about it or grateful for it. I am both excited and grateful . . . but I'm also sort of in limbo, emotionally.

Currently, I am watching too much TV, working at the bakery, waiting to hear back from University of Washington, and loving the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation.

Things are good, but I can't really start planning my future's steps until I know whether or not I have been accepted to UW. Several people have asked me what I will do if I don't get in, so, here is The Plan:

If I don't get into UW:
   - Stay at Great Harvest at least for the summer and eat lots of good bread. And cookies.
   - Keep loving the Washington Trust for the next several months.
   - Research more preservation programs and make a list of ten programs I would like to apply to. (I can trim it later.)
   - Think about moving to NYC with Heidi after my lease is up and camp out there until/through the next round of applications.
   - Move to wherever I get accepted.

If I do get accepted:
   - Big party.
   - Change my cellphone number to a Seattle number.
   - Figure out how to get my car registered in WA despite the complications.
   - Research what my schedule will be like for school and figure out how to keep Great Harvest and The Washington Trust in my life.

There you have it. My life plans. For now.

Yesterday was the day I have been waiting for. Yesterday was the day the good folks at the Washington Trust asked me to create a facebook page for them.

YESSSS.

Here it is:

The Washington Trust for Historic Preservation

The other thing they asked me to do yesterday was to create a Flickr account for them.

Double YESSSS!

I have not yet created the Flickr page, as I do not yet have the pictures with which I will be populating said page. I am going in to the office tomorrow to get them from Chris. There are so many, I am taking my external harddrive with me.

Now, you all might be wondering why this excites me so much . . . britta certainly has been for the last several weeks. I will tell you why.

It is my theory that more people care about historic preservation than you or I realize. I think most people in the Seattle area would prefer to keep and renovate historic buildings rather than tear them down to make way for those new, drab, vinyl-polystyrene-sided ones. But, most people also don't think they have any influence on what developers develop. I think we can have a more widespread effect on the fate of our historic buildings if only we knew how many people agreed with us. The key is to get people involved, and the internet is the perfect vehicle for this.

People can get information through emails, facebook, newsletters, and message boards so much more easily than through a paper-mailing or sporadic meetings they do not have time to attend. The internet is the perfect tool to involve people who care, but are not able to dedicate their careers to historic preservation.

And so, I am taking it upon myself to work to find the best ways to get people involved and get people excited by getting them information. Facebook was the first step.

Become a fan.

Not very creative of me to always quote lyrics in my blog posts, except for the times when I don't. Not very creative, and certainly not consistent. Who do I think I am??

Well, my application to grad school at UW is in. It's funny because just like when I applied for my undergrad (excluding, of course, last year's doomed round of MA applications), I only applied to one school. I know where I want to go, and I applied there. Except, this one doesn't come with a built in back-up called BYU-Idaho. Hmmm. A little dangerous, no?

See, the thing is, I applied to UW because it is a quality school and I want to live in Seattle. I have always (or at least for the last three years) wanted to live in Seattle and I absolutely love it here. I can't get over how much I love it here! Maybe it's just the stark contrast to my most recent city of long-term residence, but regardless, I can't get over how thankful I am every morning to wake up here.

So . . . if I don't get in? What then? Well, I don't quite know. Apparently, I didn't think that far ahead.

Okay, this post is rough and maybe incomplete, but, give me a break. After nearly five years, I'm still trying to get into this whole "regular blogging" thing. Maybe this attempt will be the one?

Also, I think I need a re-design.
